CBM in Bolivia

The work of CBM has been present in Bolivia for more than 30. The Government of Bolivia has adopted the CBR approach, as a national strategy and its implementation through projects of CBM with partners are a special referent.

About Bolivia

Bolivia is a country that has no seacoast in the west center of South America. The country limits with Brazil by the North and East, Paraguay by the Southeast, Argentina by the South and Chile and Peru by the West. According to the 2012 national census, the population in Bolivia is 10,027,254 people, thereof 388.119 (3.87%), has some type of disability. However, according to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), there would be approximately 741,382 people with different types and degrees of disability, representing the 7.12% of the total population.
 
According to the UNDP 2015 Human Development Report, Bolivia has a medium index of human development, placing number 108 among 187 countries in the world.
 
Population living in extreme poverty is 17.3% and the child mortality rate in 2102 was 48.6 of every thousand babies born alive.
 
The main needs of persons with disabilities in Bolivia are access to inclusive quality education, access to diagnose, medical attention and rehabilitation services, access to payed and/or informal employment and the respect of their rights and their full inclusion into society.

Where we work

CBM is present in seven of the nine departments in Bolivia: La Paz, Cochabamba, Oruro, Santa Cruz, Tarija, Potosi and Beni.

  1. Persons with disabilities and in vulnerability conditions improve their access to inclusive quality education services
  2. Persons with disability and in vulnerability conditions improve their access to health, diagnose and rehabilitation services, according to their needs
  3. Persons with disabilities are associated and empowered to achieve respect to their rights

Our partnerships

CBM has supported local institutions in Bolivia for more than 30 years. Today, there are five projects and five national programs through local institutions and in coordination with governmental entities and the Ministries of Health and Justice.

  2. Hearing deficiency prevention and attention –– 1 national program in 4 departments of Bolivia
  3. Inclusive education for deaf youngsters –– 1 national program in 4 departments of Bolivia
  4. Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) –– 1 national program in 5 departments of Bolivia
  5. Children’s mental health –– 1 national program in 3 departments of Bolivia
  6. Disability mainstreaming and advocacy –– Cross-cutting topic in national programs
