CBM is proud to announce that Dr. Henry Ebong Nkumbe has been given the award 'Knight of the Order of Merit' in Madagascar.

CBM is proud to announce that Dr. Henry Ebong Nkumbe has been given the award 'Knight of the Order of Merit' in Madagascar.
 
Dr. Henry Ebong Nkumbe, Medical Advisor CBM, worked in Madagascar since September 2006 until September 2012. He promoted the implementation of the VISION 2020: the right to sight in Madagascar in cooperation with the Health Ministry. He also contributed to improving the quality of eye health care, especially in cataract surgery.

The Malagasy Government has expressed its recognition for this long serving work, through the Health Ministry, giving Dr. Henry the award of Knight of the Order of Merit. The ceremony took place at the Health Ministry at Ambohidahy Antananarivo, on 29 August 2012, under the patronage of His Excellency the Minister of Health Dr Johanita Ndahimananjara.

Dr. Henry Ebong Nkumbe's achievements in Madagascar are many:
  • Collaboration with the Health Ministry for the implementation of Vision 2020 with the creation of the National Committee of VISION 2020: the right to sight in 2007.
  • For the development of human resources, he conducted the training of eye doctors working with projects funded by CBM in small incision cataract surgeries.
  • He also coached the eye doctors trained by the University in Antananarivo. He contributed for the development of the training curricula of refractionists and ophthalmic nurses at CNFSOC – National Training Center for Community Eye Health, a project funded by CBM and lead by the INSPC – National Institute for Public Health and Community.
  • As ophthalmologist, he performed numerous consultations and eye surgeries in several eye units supported by CBM.
  • To raise awareness on blindness, during World Sight Day 2007, Dr. Henry produced a documentary film featuring the life of blind children in Madagascar. As a result, this film generated the donation of 20 Perkins Braillers to the Blind school in Antsirabe by other international organisations. During the World Sight Day 2011, he contributed to the production of the famous Malagasy Film called TSINDRY ALOKA 1 that was then promoted throughout the country.  The film related the social drama of blindness and conflict of coexistence of different entities Religions in Madagascar. This socio-police comedy aimed to educate the Malagasy that the avoidable blindness can be treated and that being with a disability should not lead to social exclusion. At the same time, the film highlighted gender issues as the main actor is a woman.
  • To overcome the lack of the information about the blindness in the country, Dr. Henry, along with the Eye Care Health Ministry department, completed the country eye care mapping.
  • He also initiated several operational researches in eye work in Madagascar. As an eye care promoter, he was at the forefront important partnerships between the Ministry of Health and Education and foreign agencies such as the Leeds University Teaching Hospital in UK or KCCO (Kilimanjaro Centre for Community Ophthalmology) in Tanzania.
