Distribution of Cholera kits to CBM beneficiaries in the Antenne of Croix-des-Missions, northern Port-au-Prince, Haiti, January 21 2011
In response to the cholera outbreak in Haiti, CBM has distributed cholera prevention kits and conducted an education campaign to help prevent the spread of the deadly disease.
The situation in Haiti
Since October 2010, more than 260,000 Haitians have been infected with cholera and more than 4,700 have died. The World Health Organization expects the outbreak to continue and estimates the outbreak could affect over 400,000 people before it's over.
CBM distributes cholera prevention kits
In order to mitigate the spread of cholera, CBM Haiti is providing education and support to 60,000 beneficiaries, including our local partner organisations and CBM programme beneficiaries.
To achieve this CBM has distributed 12,000 Cholera Prevention Kits (CPKs), which include antiseptic soap for washing hands, aqua tabs to treat drinking water, and educational material depicting appropriate hand washing techniques and cholera prevention activities.
Education and training
CBM has conducted more than 46 public awareness trainings for its staff, the staff of its partner organisations and its beneficiaries and their families members. CBM’s cholera response allows staff and programme partners to protect themselves and continue working in their earthquake response programmes effectively.
CBM Haiti's is focusing its programmes on the most vulnerable members of the Haitian community, people living with a disability, their families and their communities. To date, CBM Haiti has helped more than 85,000 people.
