Following the earthquake which struck the Latin American country of Chile in the early morning hours of Saturday, February 27, CBM stands ready to support its partner in Concepción, Chile's second largest city, home to more than 200,000 people, and one of the hardest hit communities.

The epicentre of the earthquake was located 325 kilometres south-west of Santiago, the Chilean capital, and 115 kms north-east of Concepción, Chile's second largest city, home to more than 200,000 people, and one of the hardest hit communities.

CBM has been working in Chile for more than 25 years and has a program, COALIVI (Corporación de Ayuda al Limitado Visual), founded by the blind German lady Ingelore Bernhardt and located in Concepción. Link to CBM Partner in Concepción, COALIVI.

COALIVI offers comprehensive education, rehabilitation and health care services for persons who are blind and visually impaired in the region. It also serves as a training centre for medical staff in the region.

It is now known that the building of the eye clinic and E&R Centre for people with visual disability at COALIVI suffered serious damage as a result of the earthquake on Saturday 27 February. The Partner will assess the situation and inform CBM of the likely cost of damage as soon as possible.

There is likely to be a need for CBM to offer ongoing support to COALIVI, as a strategic partner of CBM in Chile for the development of E&R services including low vision and a training centre for many CBM partners and other programmes and professionals in the region.
