CBM began its work through partners in Cambodia in 1983 with Maryknoll Catholic Mission of America starting a Community-Based Rehabilitaion (CBR) Programme which was the first programme to be set up in the country for persons with visual impairment & other disabilities.
Post war Cambodia meant a huge influx of International Non-Governmental organisations which enabled the programme to use these resources when working in the community to refer for appropriate services.
What we do
Because of the lack of trained national personnel at that time, CBM supported the setting up of an eye hospital in Takeo province which has now developed into a training centre for ophthalmic doctors and nurses. It provides good models of eye care services and works closely with the Ministry of Health and National Prevention of Blindness Committee in the Capital Phnom Penh.
Through the CBR network CBM partnered with Cambodian Development Mission for Disability who provides cross disability comprehensive CBR programme. Krousar Thmey School for the Deaf and Lavalla School for children with physical disabilities both aim to promote and develop Inclusive Education for children in rural areas. Jesuit Services provides services to rural communities in their prevention of Ear Care Programme and Veterans International assists through the community-based programmes including persons affected by landmines.
