Dr Albrecht Hennig from Germany is one of CBM's longest-serving eye doctors.

He started working for CBM in Pakistan in 1981, and has been living and working since 1983 in Lahan/Nepal, where he has helped to make Sagarmatha Choudary Eye Hospital the biggest and best eye hospital in the country. In 2004 alone, he and his team performed more than 48,000 cataract operations.

In addition to his surgical duties, he holds numerous basic and further training courses for eye doctors from Nepal and India.

Dr Hennig developed the fishhook technique, a sutureless cataract surgery procedure that has meanwhile been adopted throughout the world.

Since 1987, Dr Hennig has also acted as Eye Care Advisor to CBM. -Development and consolidation of eye work in eastern Nepal as ophthalmologist and Programme Director of EREC-P

Dr. Hennig and his team's tasks include:
  • Treatment of eye diseases, eye surgery, various training
  • Management and administration of EREC-P
The aims of the Project are:
  • Eradication of avoidable/treatable blindness to under-priviledged population in eastern Nepal and North India
  • Human Resource Development
On 27 September 2005, the Social Service Award 2005 in Nepal was conferred on Dr. Hennig for his efforts in preventing blindness from cataract.
