Vietnam Federation on Disability (VFD) organised the Asia and Pacific Disability Forum (APDF) during 26-29 November 2014 in Hanoi, Vietnam. The forum was attended by more than 500 domestic and international delegates from 42 countries worldwide. And the objective of the forum was to raise social awareness on disability and development within Vietnam and in the region.

The APDF was presided over by Ms. Pham Thi Hai Chuyen, the Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs. The Minister shared to the audiences that Vietnam also faced difficulties in establishing rights of persons with disabilities like many countries in Asia and the Pacific. Chairman of the Asia Pacific Forum, Kyung Seok Park also added that APDF represents a real prospect of change for persons with disabilities and a platform for discussion on disability and development in the region.

CBM Australia and CBM Vietnam joined the Asia and Pacific Disability Forum walk to promote rights of persons with disabilities and to celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities in Hanoi, Vietnam
CBM Australia and CBM Vietnam Country Coordination Office joined the APDF and took the opportunity to network with key Disabled People’s Organisations (DPOs), explored disability and development information and opportunities to work together in the future. Key DPOs from across Vietnam such as Hanoi Disabled People Association (DP-Hanoi), Disability Research and Capacity Development, Action to Community Development Center, Vietnam Blind Association, Independent Living Centre shared valuable information on their disability work and directions.

Following the CBM Disability & Inclusive Development Training of Trainers (DID ToT), CBM Vietnam supported DID ToT graduates who are now resources persons to contribute their voices at the APDF and networking with other follow persons with disabilities and DPOs from Vietnam and the region. CBM also supported representatives from Vietnam Institute of Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning under Ministry of Construction to attend the APDF to advocate and promote accessibility in public buildings.

A walk to commemorate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2014 and promote rights of persons with disabilities in Hanoi, Vietnam

The Asia and Pacific Forum was running in parallel with Vietnam National Assembly Meeting and discussion on the ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD). On 28 November 2014, 100% of the National Assembly members voted yes to ratify the UN CRPD. Before the ratification, CBM also attended the consultation on UN CRPD organised by the National Assembly.

In commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2014, VFD also organised the march as a part of APDF on 29 November 2014 where the participants wore the same t-shirts joining the walk to promote rights of persons with disabilities. Thousands of persons with disabilities, family members, government representatives, activists, DPOs, national and international organisations marched down the streets of Hanoi to raise public awareness on the rights of persons with disabilities.
