CBM monitors the effect of monsoon flooding, which struck Manila, Philippines in August 2012.

Monsoon rains

8 August 2012: Nearly 850,000 people in Manila Metro and nearby provinces have been displaced by floods spawned from 11 straight days of southwest monsoon rains. Sixteen people were confirmed killed in the latest barrage of rain that began on Monday 6 August, bringing the total number of fatalities from the monsoon rains across the Philippines since late July to 69, according to authorities.

About 60 percent of Manila, a sprawling metropolis of about 12 million people, remained inundated on Wednesday 8 August.

Impact on CBM and partners

CBM staff in Manila are safe, and CBM partners in the region have not reported problem. CBM Inclusive Emergency Response Unit is continuing to monitor the situation.
