Professor Allen Foster, originally from Lancashire in the UK, graduated with Honours in Medicine from the University of Birmingham in 1973. He was a general medical officer in a mission hospital in Tanzania from 1975 to 1985, Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Ophthalmology / Moorfields Eye Hospital from 1985 to 1999 and Medical Consultant / Director of CBM from 1985 to 2005.

Professor Foster became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1980, a Fellow of Royal College of Ophthalmologists in 1989 and received an O.B.E. (Order of the British Empire) in 1998 ‘For services to Ophthalmology in the developing world’. He is currently President of CBM and Professor in International Eye Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. Allen is married to Penny and they have 3 grown up children.
