The primary focus of the meeting was to develop general quality standards for inclusive development. The RAC EMR recommendations are based upon the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Discussions were structured along the lines of the CBR matrix and included a focus on inclusive (project cycle) management. Specific recommendations on to how to ensure the inclusiveness of CBM supported projects and activities in the Eastern Mediterranean Region were drafted and follow up actions recommended to the CBM Regional Office Team EMR.

Presentation of CBM's strategy for the Eastern Mediterranean Region
Earlier this year various teams of competence including CBM global and regional colleagues, regional rights holders as well as regional partners conducted a situation analysis along the lines of the CBR matrix.

Their results have been discussed by the RAC members whose recommendations on general principles and minimum standards for inclusive projects will be guiding the future work of Regional Office (RO) EMR and its regional partner organisations. Key Questions raised were:
  • Where should CBM focus its support in the region?
  • What would be core opportunities for CBM?

In July 2010 the Regional Advisory Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean Region was established. Its members are disability activists and experts from governmental and non-governmental organisations in the region. They give CBM feedback and recommendations on regional strategies and advise on regional policies and concepts.

For the first time Ms Hend Al Showaier, a disability activist from Saudi Arabia, and Dr. Heba Hagrass, a disability activist from Egypt, joined the RAC meeting. Both added valuable inputs into the discussion and enhanced awareness for their field of competence. Ms Hend Al Showaier added the perspective of the deaf community to the expertise of EMR Regional Advisory Committee.
