In 1998, CBM established a small eye clinic at the Good Shepherd Mission Hospital on top of the Lebombo mountains of Eastern Swaziland. Who could imagine that this small venture would quickly grow to being the sole provider of Eye care to the Kingdom of Swaziland? Slowly the services grew and with CBM support.
The Swaziland Ministry of Health now has an Ophthalmologist in the capital city, relieving the pressure on the good Shepherd Hospital. Swaziland has the dubious distinction of having the highest HIV incidence in the world. Together with severe economic problems, this has seen an unprecedented health disaster in the Kingdom. Orphans are a great concern to us. Removal of cataract blindness in the Elders has been proven by the Good Shepherd team to improve the care of these orphans.
The Good Shepherd Mission Hospital Eye clinic has a good reputation for excellent medical work and this has led to the training of medical personnel and Eye specialists. The community outreach programme has given the opportunity to poor or disabled rural people to access these services.
