CBM's West Africa Regional Office is CBM's representation in West Africa. Based in Lomé, Togo, since 1984, the Regional Office works closely with local partner organisations throughout the region.

The main purpose of the Regional Office is to develop the capacity of local partner organisations at an individual, institutional and societal level with a view to improving the quality of life of people with disabilities in West Africa.

The partner organisations include governmental institutions, typically the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education or Ministry of Social Affairs; faith-based organisations, such as Churches of various denominations and grass-roots establishments, which include among others Organisation for People with Disabilities (DPOs).

The portfolio of programmes (over 40 in total) that our partners implement varies greatly from country to country.

Throughout the region, CBM reinforces networks of comprehensive Community-Based Rehabilitation, supports inclusive, integrated or special education programmes for children with disabilities, promotes socio-economic inclusion of people with disabilities and their families and supports empowerment programmes for people with disabilities to take on an active political and social role in society.

All these programmes are also strong advocate agents for mainstreaming of the rights and needs of people with disabilities into national health, education, socioeconomic policies and poverty reduction strategies.

Current goals

CBM aims to contribute to building an inclusive society in West Africa by promoting and facilitating multisectoral collaboration, ensuring that all stakeholders - such as people with disabilities, organisation for people with disabilities, governmental institutions, national and international disability and development organisations - are active and committed to inclusive community development and poverty reduction, taking into account the rights and needs of children and people with disabilities and their families.

Future goals

  • Capacity building of partner organisations through continuous medical and technical advice, training and workshops.
  • Scaling-up of local, regional and national CBR networks.
  • Working with government and grass root organisations for mainstreaming of disability into national development policies.
