British eye specialist Dr Colin Cook has lived and worked in South Africa for many years. In 1996 he came into contact with CBM as a doctor at Edendale Hospital in Pietermaritzburg. He became an executive staff member of the blindness prevention programme for the KwaZulu Natal Province, where his main task was to train national eye doctors.
From April 2004 he took on a new position at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. Within the eye department, he acts as Project Manager and eye doctor for the VISION 2020 programme. The programme aims to achieve a significant rise in cataract surgeries and to train eye-medical staff.

CBM President Professor Allen Foster met with World Health Organisation Director-General Dr Margaret Chan, for the WHO's global initiative to eliminate avoidable blindness "Vision 2020: The Right to Sight” on the eve of World Sight Day 2007 at the WHO's headquarters.
