Claudia Ehlers has been at Ruharo Eye Hospital in Uganda since August 2003. Before that, Ms Ehlers, who comes from Hamburg, worked for ten years at two eye hospitals in Germany's Ruhr area.
In Ruharo, Ms Ehlers is setting up low vision services and an orthoptist department with vision efficiency training facilities. There are some 890,000 low-vision patients and about 125,000 children in Uganda who are urgently in need of spectacles. At present, Ruharo is the only hospital that offers such services. That is why Ms Ehlers is conducting seminars for members of various professions (eye doctors, teachers, ergotherapists etc.). Since this service is very welcome in Uganda, she also works with other projects and also at schools for children with visual impairments.
