German eye specialist Dr Irmela Erdmann has been working for CBM since 1998.
She initially worked at Ruharo Eye Hospital in Mbarara, Uganda, with a catchment area in the southwest of the country numbering some 2.1 million people.
Since the end of 2005, she has been assigned to Mengo Hospital in the capital Kampala.
