Dr Kollmann has spent a large part of his professional life as a doctor in Africa.
From 1985 to 1988, he worked as a general practitioner for the German Development Service in Ethiopia, where he was particularly affected by the many blind people he met.

After completing his specialist medical training in Munich, he went to Nairobi, Kenya. At the University Hospital there, which cooperates with Munich University, he handles the basic and further training of African doctors and specialists. In addition to his lecturing duties, he works at the hospital as senior physician.
Since 2001, Dr Kollmann has had a contract with CBM, which supports the scholarship programme of the University Hospital in Nairobi.
