U.S. citizen Karen Heinicke-Motsch grew up in a village in the mountains of Papua New Guinea, which was her home until she moved to the USA as a teenager.
After completing her university studies, she spearheaded the deinstitutionalisation movement in the USA before heading back to Papua New Guinea in the mid 1980s. There, she worked at a CBM-supported project for children with disabilities.
From 1987, Ms Heinicke-Motsch worked under a CBM contract, setting up and advising CBR projects in South East Asia and Latin America.
From 2002, she directed an international project on Development and Disability for another well-known organisation for persons with disabilities.
In 2006, she returned to CBM to work as an advisor on CBR for CBM's Regional Office in Ecuador. As a member of CBM's CBR Advisory Working Group and in connection with a WHO project on CBR guidelines, she is entrusted with international assignments.
Karen Heinicke-Motsch is an expert in special education and early intervention. She has two fantastic teenage children and is married to a German from the Baden region in southern Germany.
