Nyholm, Sture and Eunice
Location: Juba, Sudan
Project: South Sudan Eye Care programme with Government of South Sudan, Ministry of Health
Dr Nyholm and his wife Eunice, moved to Juba in South Sudan in May 2006 after having worked 7 years at Sabatia Eye Hospital in Kenya. During the Sabatia time the couple travelled into South Sudan with their team for 55 times (each time a 2 weeks trip) and performed close to 14.000 eye surgeries! The aim of moving to Juba in South Sudan was to support the Government of South Sudan, Ministry of Health by providing eye care services to patients with visual impairments. A further aim was to commence a training programme and to train various cadres of eye care staff, especially cataract surgeons.

Since moving to Sudan Dr Nyholm and his team performed close to 800 sight-restoring surgeries at the clinic and further 1300 surgeries have been done in the regular outreach visits throughout the south of Sudan. This Finland-born doctor says about his work “we have come to restore sight. We are the tools, the instruments, the extension of many co-workers along the line, starting with the donor in our home counties.”

Dr. Nyholm has been working with CBM for the past 10 years but he has lived and worked in Africa for the past 24 years.

Sture and Eunice Nyholm have been married since 1997. They live and work together in South Sudan.
