Informationen: The 38-bed eye department of the large NKST hospital is located in Mkar, Benue State, in Nigeria's middle belt. A very motivated national ophthalmologist, assisted by well-trained ophthalmic nurses, has developed this comprehensive medical eye care service. Apart from consulting eye patients at the base hospital, the project provides outreach services to other CBM supported community based rehabilitation (CBR) programmes (Oji River, Marist, Ossiomo). The majority of patients, attended by the eye team, is suffering from cataract and glaucoma. The department has a small but adequate infrastructure. The project will conduct various courses and workshops for cataract surgical rate workers, primary eye care personnel as well as CBR fieldworkers. Due to the growth of the eye programme, a DO candidate is being sent for training in April 2007.
