| Informationen: | The St. Louise School for the Deaf and Mentally Handicapped is situated in Ikot Ekpene, the second largest town in Akwa Ibom State, a very densely populated area of southeastern Nigeria. The centre is owned and managed by Catholic Sisters from the order of Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul and draws children from a wide area. The school provides classes 1 to 6 for hearing impaired children as well as some classes for the intellectually impaired. A small vocational section is established to provide practical training for some of the children, who are unable to continue to secondary school. Approximately two hundred pupils are included in the programme and 75% of those are boarding students. A well equipped audiology unit, led by a British trained audiologist, is attached to the school. This unit screens a large number of school children in the area each year. Audiometric tests are made and hearing aids are fitted when appropriate. An audiology technicians' course was started, but regrettably, is suspended because the government rehabilitation board has continued to delay accreditation. |
