Projektname: Rehabilitation Centre Ossiomo
Projekt-Beschreibung: CBR Programme / Service
for Multiple Disabled
People
Ort: Nigeria, Ossiomo
Informationen: The Ossiomo Rehabilitation Centre, owned and managed by a Catholic order of Sisters from Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, was developed from a rehabilitation unit attached to a government leprosy hospital. Situated in a rural area on the border between Edo and Delta State in south central Nigeria, it is about 12 km from the large town of Agbor. Some services such as physiotherapy, eye, orthopaedic and hospice facilities are still provided to about fifty very severely disabled leprosy patients. A second centre is situated at Okpanam, a few km from Asaba, the capital of Delta State with community based rehabilitation (CBR) services and a special school catering for about hundred fifty hearing or intellectually impaired children. At Ossiomo, a rehabilitation hospital is being developed for ophthalmology and orthopaedic services. A good operating theatre has been constructed as well as a physiotherapy unit, an X-ray unit, wards and an orthopaedic workshop. Presently, operations are carried out by visiting surgeons, but it is hoped that a permanent ophthalmologist will eventually be trained for the hospital. The Ossiomo CBR programme, besides identifying and following cases of eye problems and orthopaedics, also provides mental health services and assists with the development of micro enterprises for disabled clients.
