| Informationen: | Groote Schuur Hospital is the teaching hospital for the University of Cape Town, situated in Cape Town, South Africa. It is run by the Western Cape provincial government. The ophthalmology department, together with the department at Tygerberg Hospital, is responsible for eye care for the city of Cape Town, which has a population of about 3 million. It is also a tertiary referral centre for the provinces of the Western Cape, Northern Cape, and parts of the Eastern Cape. The estimated prevalence of blindness is 0,75%, of which 50% is due to cataract. Glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy are the other leading causes of blindness. The project is concerned with cataract surgery service provision and human resource development for Vision 2020 in the Southern Africa region. |
