What is a Disability?

Social Model of Disability

A disability is the outcome of complex interactions between the functional limitations arising from a person’s physical, intellectual, or mental condition and the social and physical environment. A disability has multiple dimensions and is far more than an individual or medical problem. A disability is a complex system of social restrictions resulting from discrimination. Christian Blind Mission (CBM) adapts its approaches toward this social model of disabilities. Thus, the disabling effects of impairments can be overcome by the means of empowerment, participation, and inclusion of people with disabilities.
