What are Ocular Injuries?

Injuries may be minor or severe. They may involve foreign bodies being on or in the eye. Depending on the severity and the kind of the injury, it may affect vision and may occasionally lead to permanent loss of vision.

What causes Ocular Injuries?

Chemicals, blunt or sharp objects can cause ocular injuries.
Especially at risk are:
  • workers who work without eye protection
  • people who drive without seat-belts on
  • children in environments not suitable for them
  • people who do certain sports without eye protection
  • soldiers in combat situations

How are Ocular Injuries treated?

The treatment depends on the type of injury: a foreign object can be removed. Other types of injury may require eye drops or even surgery.
Prevention of ocular injures is extremely important. This includes:
  • raising awareness of ocular injuries
  • wearing seat belts
  • using eye protection whenever necessary
  • identifying and avoiding situations that may be unsafe for children
