What is Age-related Macular Degeneration?
Age-related macular degeneration is an eye condition that progressively damages the macula - the area of the retina responsible for central and colour vision. While the condition rarely results in complete blindness and usually leaves peripheral vision intact, detailed central vision is affected, rendering the patient unable to read, drive a car, recognise faces or see objects in fine detail.
What causes Age-related Macular Degeneration?
The condition is caused by the deterioration of the macula as one gets older. The cause is however unknown, although cigarette smoking is a significant risk factor.
How is Age-related Macular Degeneration treated?
There is no treatment at present that cures this disease. Medical treatments which may halt or slow down progression are being evaluated. Low vision training and special devices can help patients to optimally utilise the remaining vision.
