Disability and Development - Global Issues

Examples of past events that CBM has taken part in include:

NGDOs, public health experts, researchers, academics, eye care personnel and government representatives join for presentations, exhibitions and discussions on the key scientific and public health challenges influencing the provision of refractive services.

Cooperations and Campaigns:
'Access for all?' CBM Photo exhibition, European Parliament, 2-5 December 2008
Of the estimated 650 million people with a disability worldwide, 80 percent live in the developing world, yet only 4 per cent of those have access to development cooperation. Together with Member of the European Parliament Gay Mitchell, CBM's EU Liaison Office held a photo exhibition, 'Access for All?', at the European Parliament from 2nd to 5th of December 2008.
On the eve of World Disability Day 2008, a year which saw the entry into force of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the exhibition featured images of Persons with Disabilities in developing countries with access to healthcare, education, employment, humanitarian aid and community inclusion.
First Asia-Pacific CBR Congress, Bangkok, 9-11 December 2008
Community-based Rehabilitation (CBR) calls for a holistic approach to disability which empowers individuals and communities by putting Persons with Disabilities at the centre of the decision-making process. The inaugural Asia-Pacific CBR Congress, in which CBM is a supporting partner, will explore CBR as a grass-root strategy to promote inclusive development through:
The Conference, jointly hosted by The World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the Royal Thai Government, takes place in Bangkok from 9-11 December 2008.
Community-based rehabilitation (CBR) is an inclusive development strategy. In 2004, The World Health Organisation, International Labour Organisation and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation published a Joint Position Paper on CBR to refocus it as a multi-sectoral strategy for rehabilitation, equalisation of opportunities, poverty reduction and social inclusion for persons with disabilities and their families. The WHO, ILO and UNESCO, in partnership with leading international NGOs including DPOs, are now developing CBR guidelines to put the Joint Position Paper on CBR into operation.
