Restoring Tsunami-Affected Micro-Enterprises

A total of 31 people received the necessary assistance to repair vehicles, tractors and three-wheelers. Among this number are 19 disabled persons benefiting from the programme.
One-Day and Multi-Day Boats Programmes
Kudawella’s main industry is the fishery industry which suffered a tremendous loss from the December 2004 tsunami. The decision was made to provide five one-day boats and 18 multi-day boats as well as engines, navigation systems, and nets according to individual assessments. The following aspects were taken into consideration:
CBM’s aim is to help people restart their fishing business and to provide employment for local fishermen.
- the over-fishing of the coastal area,
- the envisaged sustainability of the support,

CBM’s aim is to help people restart their fishing business and to provide employment for local fishermen.
Well-Cleaning Programme
Three common wells located at Kudawella, which were unusable after the tsunami, are currently being repaired with the help of the environmental organization "Ruk Rakaganno", based in Colombo. The community takes part in a Shrama Dhana (Singhalese term for communal labour) and cleans surrounding areas, where thick wild plants have grown. After cleaning it is expected that the villagers can use these wells for bathing, washing, and for drinking purposes.
