CBM Organises European Conference on Disability and Development

Discuss UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

The first European Conference on Disability and Development Cooperation will be held on 20-21 November 2006 in Brussels at the Committee of the Regions. The aim of the Conference, which is being organised by CBM and Light for the World, is to bring together EU actors from Government, EU institutions, organizations of persons with disabilities and development NGOs to discuss the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It will examine how the Convention can have a positive effect on promoting inclusive development cooperation policies across the EU and impact to improve the lives of persons with disabilities in developing countries.

Evelyn Mouzungo is using a tricycle, she received from CBM's partner organisation in 2003. The 25 year old has severe scoliosis. Thanks to the support of CBM's partner Macoha, she was able to attend school. In July 2003 Evelyn received a loan. Now she is able to earn her own money with a small business. © CBM

The conference is part of the International Disability and Development Consortium (IDDC), of which CBM is a member, and its project ‘Breaking the cycle of poverty and disability in Development Cooperation’, being supported by Director General of Employment and Social Affairs of the European Commission, and implemented in partnership with AIFO (Italy), Handicap International (France, Luxembourg), DCDD (Netherlands), eRko (Slovakia), Healthlink (UK), PHOS (Belgium), SHIA (Sweden), DPI (Italia), Groupement Français des Personnes Handicapées (France), National Disability Council of the Netherlands (Netherlands).
