CBM Congratulates Dr. Margaret Chan As New Director General of WHO
20 year long collaboration with the WHO
In a special session on Thursday, 9 November, Dr Chan has been appointed by the World Health Assembly.
"CBM is pleased to congratulate Dr Margaret Chan on her appointment as the new Director-General of the World Health Organisation. CBM values its 20 year long collaboration with the W.H.O. to develop a number of programmes which are improving health care for people with disability.
These programmes include the VISION 2020 - right to sight initiative which has demonstated a 15% reduction in the number of people with blindness over the last ten years; the campaign to increase access to hearing aids for children with deafness - WW Hearing; as well as initiatives to promote Community Based Rehabilitaion and community services for people with mental health diseases. We wish Dr Chan every success in her appointment."

Dr Margaret Chan is a well-known public figure because of her record of leadership in fighting diseases - first in Hong Kong, and more recently at WHO.

In her acceptance speech, Dr Chan said: "what matters most to me is people. And two specific groups of people in particular. I want us to be judged by the impact we have on the health of the people of Africa, and the health of women. … Improvements in the health of the people of Africa and the health of women are key indicators of the performance of WHO."

Dr Margaret Chan, from the People's Republic of China, obtained her Medical Degree from the University of Western Ontario in Canada. She joined the Hong Kong Department of Health in 1978, where her career in public health began.
In 1994, Dr Chan was appointed to Director of Health of Hong Kong. In her nine-year tenure as director, she launched new preventive and promotive health care services. In 2003, Dr Chan became WHO's Director of the Department of Protection of the Human Environment.
In June 2005, she was appointed as Director, Communicable Diseases Surveillance and Response as well as Representative of the Director-General for Pandemic Influenza.
Now, Dr. Chan has been appointed as the new Director-General, who is the chief technical and administrative officer of WHO. Her predecessor Dr LEE Jong-wook had died suddenly on 22 May 2006.
