On Thursday, 30. November, typhoon Durian triggered a massive mudslide from Mount Mayon volcano on the Philippines main island of Luzon. The overall death toll reports vary, hitting 400. Many people are missing. CBM’s partner Simon of Cyrene, is situated near the volcano in Daraga and is currently hard at work to provide emergency relief.
Simon of Cyrene is a comprehensive community rehabilitation programme, comprising a blindness prevention programme, special education, an orthopaedic workshop and other activities closely conducted with the communities of Albay and Legaspi.

CBM-partner serves people in Santo Domingo and Batangas province

Another CBM-supported project is located at the foot of Mayon volcano: The Holy Face Rehabilitation Project for Mental Health provides mental health care also to people living in the typhoon affected areas of Santo Domingo parish, belonging to Albay province.

CBM’s CBR project in Batangas province, in the South-East of Manila, has also been hit by the typhoon. Reports from the respective partner, the Norfil Foundation, say that houses of many clients are damaged - mostly roofs blown off. Mike Davies, CBM’s Regional Representative in South-East Asia informs: "Communications are deteriorating. No electricity to re-charge cell phones; landline phone system down. Clothing, food, water, medical help, and post-emergency housing repairs in the affected areas will probably be needed. Poor South East Asia - one disaster after another." The project staff is currently working on an assessment, indicating the needs of people in Batangas.
