Sixty million people are being excluded from the fight against HIV & AIDS simply because they are disabled. The new Africa Campaign on Disability and HIV & AIDS, which was launched on January 23-25 in Cape Town, South Africa, aims to reduce the vulnerability of persons with disabilities to the impact of HIV & AIDS.
The Campaign was founded by the African Decade of Disabled Persons and Handicap International.

CBM is a member of the Africa Campaign on Disability and HIV&AIDS
CBM is a senior member of the Africa Campaign. Geert Vanneste, the former CEO of CCBRT as CBM’s delegate to the campaign. Under his auspices, in 1996, CCBRT has developed the first holistic programme on HIV/AIDS and disability in Africa. Vanneste, who worked for CBM in Africa since 1989, was involved in making sure that the campaign came into being. Already in 2002 he wrote an article, which focussed both on the issue of disability and HIV&AIDS and triggered a discussion on an international level.
"It is essential for CBM’s partners to raise the awareness of persons with disabilities in Africa on the issue of HIV/AIDS, as they don’t have access to information and therefore are not able to protect themselves. We encourage CBM’s partners to combine information with voluntary counselling and testing and the provision of medication to HIV-infected persons with disabilities", says Matthias Späth, Vice President for Programme and Partner Enablement of CBM.
