CBM’s Response To HIV/AIDS And Disability
CBM is one of the first organisation to have a policy on disability and HIV&AIDS in place, which was developed on the grounds that CBM’s mandate to improve the quality of life of persons with disabilities and their families is seriously undermined in many countries by a combination of poverty, disability and HIV&AIDS.

- Following the ‘twin-track approach’ – CBM encourages its partners to combine information campaigns in collaboration with professional organisations, with making voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) and the provision of anti-retroviral treatment accessible for HIV-infected persons with disabilities with the help of networking with other organisations.
- As HIV/AIDS causes disability, due to opportunistic infections and general weakness, social stigma and negative attitudes, CBM encourages its partners to include persons with disabilities and with HIV/AIDS into their rehabilitation programmes, as much as possible by networking and collaborating with existing specialised HIV/AIDS services.
- CBM encourages its partners to protect and improve the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children, particularly those with other disabilities, too. Use should be made of as many locally available human, material and financial resources as possible, and measures should be put in place to avoid or limit long term dependency on donor funding.
- CBM also encourages its partners to develop and implement a ‘Work Environment HIV/AIDS Policy’ that will minimise the possibility of HIV infection for CBM/Partner staff and their partners and dependents; and ensure a supportive work environment for staff infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. A respective policy will also help to manage and mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS on the work of CBM and its partners’ staff, and eliminate stigma and discrimination in the workplace.
- CBM will join alliances that share the aim of protecting persons with disabilities from getting affected by HIV/AIDS.
