Matthias Späth's aim in his new position as CBM’s vice president for programme development is "to strengthen our networks and to build new alliances in order to achieve the establishment of more sustainable service delivery infrastructures to adequately address the manifold needs of our target groups."

Matthias was appointed to his new role in April 2006. He started at CBM as a trainee in 1994. In 1996, the then 34-year-old economist became regional representative for the West Asia region. From 1997 to early 2004, he worked as regional representative for East Africa in Addis Ababa.

From 2004 until March 2006, Matthias was based in Bensheim as continental director for Africa. He says: "I was interested in development work, and always had a strong desire to work abroad. CBM was familiar to me, since my parents always donated to CBM projects."

Working for CBM had a strong effect on Matthias personally: "I became more empathetic and I learnt to listen. My job and my insights into the causes of poverty allowed me to further develop humanism within myself and to overcome ignorance, for which I am very grateful."

Matthias has a clear picture of the challenges that lie ahead of him to achieve CBM’s overall aim, to reach more persons with disabilities in the most disadvantaged societies.

"I strive to gain trust among the staff, to further optimise the structures of our programme work, and to win support for extended appliance of self-evaluation in everything we do."
