In February, CBM inaugurated a new eye clinic in Debre Markos, Ethiopia. Over 1.2 million people in Ehtiopia are blind due to poverty-related diseases, malnutrition, poor access to clean water and medical services, informed Martin Georgi, Executive Director of CBM Germany, who took part in the inauguration ceremony. The hospital costs of 170,000 Euro were provided by the German Rotary Club Stiftland and CBM.

The newly built eye clinic in Amhara National Regional State, will provide eye services to up to 10,000 people annually free of charge. The modernly equipped clinic is the newest of five other eye clinics built by CBM in four regions in Ethiopia.

The inauguration was attended by Dr. Kebede Worku, the Ethiopian State Minister of Health, who said "It is not possible to reach the intended goals single-handed; targets set in the health sector development programme can be attained in partnership with the participation of development partners and stakeholders. This is exactly what is being done by CBM. By constructing and equipping such units, we are improving accessibility of the service to the community."

The national newspaper "The Ethiopian Herald" reports about the inauguration, which took place in mid February: "CBM and Rotary Club Stiftland have fully furnished the clinic with modern and complete medical equipment that serves for eye operation. The clinic is now ready to provide services for eye patients. It is named ‘secondary’ because it is able to carry out some operations for any eye problem in the area limited as a local institution and is also more advanced than the primary eye unit.
CBM has also constructed similar facilities in Jimma University, Debre Berhan hospital, Felege Hiwot hospital (Bahir Dar), Arba Minch and Yirgalem hospitals and Pawe in Benshangul Gumuz."
