CBMI Canada: Canada Urged to Participate in the Signing Ceremony

To encourage the Canadian government to take part in the signing ceremony of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, CBMI Canada’s Executive Director, David McComiskey, sent an open letter to the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Here is a an excerpt:

"Canada’s participation in all of the meetings of the Ad Hoc committee to draft this historic document has been exemplary and a source of pride for us all. In light of this expansive history of leadership, we were disappointed to learn that your government has decided not to participate at this crucial moment in the life of the new Convention, and we are writing to urge the Canadian Government to reconsider its position and participate in the signing ceremony for this historic Convention on March 30, 2007."

Canada indicated that it will not participate in the March 30 signing ceremony of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This decision is out of step with both Canada’s active role in the development of the UN Convention and the Federal Government’s stated commitment to advance and promote the rights of persons with disabilities.

CBM Germany: Include Disability Rights into Politics

The German government will send representatives to New York on 30 March to sign the Convention, including the optional protocol. CBM Germany lobbies for the inclusion of disability into development cooperation. In concrete, CBM stresses the importance of including disability into the human rights action plan 2004-2007 the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development is currently revising.

In March, CBM representatives Rika Esser and Andreas Pruisken talked to the Federal Government Commissioner for Matters relating to Disabled Persons, Karin Evers-Meyer, and stressed the importance of article 32 of the Convention, which addresses the inclusion of disability in international development cooperation. Evers-Meyer encouraged CBM to help connecting disability and development policies more closely together. The government representative informed CBM that the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs will establish a working group for the ratification of the UN Convention. In the course of a legislative procedure, relevant associations, NGOs and DPOs will be involved.
