Hurricane Dean packed sustained winds of 230 kilometres per hour and hit Jamaica's southern coast, flooding the capital and littering it with broken trees and roofs. Joerg, Weber, CBM coworker based in the country, reports on Tuesday about damages after the hurricane hit.

„Suddenly, electricity went off and rain increased massively. At midnight, the storm reached its peak, water came in even though we had put chipboards in front of the windows.“ Weber couldn’t yet report about how the rural population has overcome the disaster. „On the phone, people told me that in some places, that the flood even carried crocodiles into the villages.“ Currently, Joerg Weber is assessing whether any of the CBM-supported projects have been affected.

CBM Supports Four Partners In Jamaica

CBM supports 4 partner projects in Jamaica: Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf; Jamaica Association for Mentally Handicapped Children; Clarendon School for the Disabled; and a community based rehabilitation project that specializes in early detection and care of disabled people in rural areas.

Since January 2006, CBM co-worker Joerg Weber, a German physiotherapist and rehabilitation expert, works with the Clarendon Group for the Disabled, a community based rehabiliation programme based in May Pen, which is supported by CBM since 1991. In the past few days, Weber has warned clients with disabilities about the hurricane and, together with the staff of the project, has tried to arrange protection for the infrastructure and equipment. They are also trying to stock some food for the next days.

The eye of the storm, about 215 kilometres west-south-west of the capital Kingston, caused widespread damage as it careered along the south coast of Jamaica. Mudslides were reported in several parts of the mountainous country of three million people.

The hurricane is currently heading towards Mexico with about 80 km per hour, and could intensify before making landfall, the Mexican Hurricane Center said.
