Project Name: St. Joseph's Remedial Training Centre Ukana Iba
Project Description: CBR Programme / Service
for Multiple Disabled
People
Location: Nigeria, Ukana Iba
Project Information: The St. Joseph's Remedial Training Centre is situated in a rural area of Akwa Ibom State in southeastern Nigeria. The project is owned and managed by the Catholic order of Sisters from the Daughters of Charity of St.Vincent de Paul. It has evolved from a vocational training centre into a comprehensive community based rehabilitation (CBR) programme with a well developed orthopaedic unit that includes a 30-bed ward, an operating theatre and a physiotherapy component. Other programmes offer a mental health service as well as an economic integration programme. Hearing impaired clients are referred to nearby St. Louise Centre and eye cases to Mercy Eye Centre, whose staff provide eye outreach to parishes covered by the CBR programme. Some vocational skills training such as carpentry, welding, shoemaking, and typing is provided to disabled clients at the centre.
