Location: Paraguay, Ciudad del Este
Project Information: Antonio Próvolo Institute is a school for deaf children with residential unit in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay. The number of children increased to 267 in 2005, many of them speaking Guarani or Portuguese (near Brazilian border). Oral teaching method in Spanish causes difficulties and it has been recommended to use the total communication method or sign language. Pre-vocational activities are offered to older students. School is run by Catholic nuns 'Hermanas de la Companía de María'. Nationwide course on deaf education was run in 2004 by CBM advisers.

CBM President Professor Allen Foster met with World Health Organisation Director-General Dr Margaret Chan, for the WHO's global initiative to eliminate avoidable blindness "Vision 2020: The Right to Sight” on the eve of World Sight Day 2007 at the WHO's headquarters.
