Project Information: The 75-bed Mercy Eye Centre is owned by the Catholic diocese of Ikot Ekpene. It is located in the small town of Abak, in Akwa Ibom State, in the southeast of Nigeria. The facility is well equipped and developed. One consultant, a junior ophthalmologist and a part-time visiting paediatric ophthalmologist are providing medical eye care. The eye team conducts limited surgical outreach into the suburbs of Port Harcourt. The hospital is an accredited training centre for the Anglophone Diploma of Ophthalmology with the West Africa College of Surgeons. Fellowship students from the affiliated nearby Calabar University are also coming for practical experience.
