Location: Zambia, Chipata
Project Information: The Magwero School for the Deaf was established by the Dutch Reform Church of South Africa in 1955. It is located at the Magwero Mission near Chipata in the South East corner of Zambia and is run by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport of Zambia. It offers primary education to 160 children. Education is given from Nursery to grade 9 and the ordinary school curriculum is followed. There are plans to start vocational training and the development of the existing farmland which will contribute substantially to the integration of the hearing impaired children into society.

CBM President Professor Allen Foster met with World Health Organisation Director-General Dr Margaret Chan, for the WHO's global initiative to eliminate avoidable blindness "Vision 2020: The Right to Sight” on the eve of World Sight Day 2007 at the WHO's headquarters.
