Project Name: Programme National de Lutte contre l'Onchocercose
Project Description: Oncho Control Programme
Location: Central African Republic, Bangui
Campaign:Vision 2020
Project Information: The National Program Lutte contre l'Onchocercose is a country wide approach to eliminate Onchocerciasis and its blinding effects in the Central African Republic (CAR). The Programs' main bases are in the capital city Bangui (population: 400,000) and in Bossangoa (population: 176,000), around 300 km north. The program is executed in partnership with the Ministry of Health and seeks to distribute Mectizan to all people at risk of Onchocerciasis in the country (33.3% of the population). Onchocerciasis is the most important cause of bilateral blindness in CAR. The National Program for Mectizan Distribution suffered considerably during the 2003 civil war, when activities had come to a complete stop for about 8 months. Since the end of the civil war activities are back to normal. The most recent success in the fight against avoidable blindness in CAR was the execution of a Vision 2020 workshop in January 2005; National and Regional Health Plans were elaborated and a coordinated effort is agreed upon by all stakeholders. Currently, the National Prevention of Blindness Committee (NPBC) is finalizing the overall plan for the prevention of blindness in CAR. CBM is contributing its professional expertise as well as salary payments to the various coordination teams in the country.
