Project Name: Rehabilitation Services for People with Disabilities
Project Description: CBR Programme / Service
for Multiple Disabled
People
Location: Nigeria, Abuja
Project Information: Services for People with Disabilies is a comprehensive community based rehabiliation (CBR) programme based in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria. It covers a large part of the Federal Capital Territory with a rapidly expanding population of approximately three million. The project is owned and managed by the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja with fifteen fieldworkers, who are supported by the church parishes. Programme components include physiotherapy, economic integration, childhood development, mental health and audiology. In addition the project enjoys close collaboration with St. Mary's Catholic Hospital, where a well-equipped eye department conducts eye surgery and orthopaedic surgery is carried out by visiting doctors from the Rehabilitation Hospital Mkar. The project has also developed a Disability Rights unit. The ophthalmologist from St. Mary's provides outreach in the project area as well as surgical outreach each month to several other projects in Nigeria. The project is at present sharing premises with the CBM Nigeria Coordination Office, but it is planned that a new project centre will be constructed at Gwagwalada, a satellite town of Abuja. This is an AUSAID funded project.
