Project Name: Rehabilitation Centre for Multiple Handicapped Blind
Project Description: Rehabilitation Centre
for Multiple Disabled
Location: Poland, Chorzow
Project Information: In the Region of Upper Silesia (South Poland) a high number of multiple disabled blind adults have been without rehabilitation services and employment. To provide rehabilitation and employment, three sheltered workshops have been set up by CBM-partner Regionalna Fundacja Pomocy Niewidomym (Regional Foundation for the Blind) in the cities of Chorzow (1999), Zawiercie (2002) and Czerwionka-Leszczyny (2004). CBM has been supporting the partner by providing start-up financing (needed for renovation of premises, equipment/machinery/furniture, transport, training). The workshops offer training and occupation to multiple impaired blind in the fields of leather processing, basketry, pottery, sewing, metal processing, woodwork, gardening and sculpture. Each of the workshops is attended by about 20 multiple disabled blind young adults. Advice in rehabilitation and production methods has been provided by the Blindeninstitutsstiftung Würzburg, Germany. The partner plans to open two new workshops in Bilsko-Biala and in Strzelce Opolskie, in order to cover the high demand, as well as to build a rehabilitation centre for Multiply Impaired Blind in Chorzow. In the nineties the establishment of a special school and an Early Intervention system for multiple impaired blind children has already been successfully supported by CBM. All institutions, which have been created by the Regional Foundation for the Blind - with the support of CBM and Blindeninstitutsstiftung Würzburg - are smoothly running now and are financed by the Polish state (running costs).
