Project Description: Rehabilitation Centre
for Multiple Disabled
Location: India North, Barapani (Meghalaya)
Project Information: Barapani, on the Guwahati-Shillong road in Meghalaya, about 105 kms from the nearest airport at Guwahati and 20 kms from Shillong which is the capital of Meghalaya. Helicopter services are available between Guwahati Shillong during favourable weather conditions. The centre is run by the Roman Catholic nuns of Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians, Shillong Province, an Indian congregation. They have a pre-school section, a school for hearing impaired children, and a hostel where school students from distant places stay. The project covers most of the Khasi Jayantia Hills areas and some portions of the State towards Guwahati. The programme addresses early intervention, education and rehabilitation of speech and hearing impaired children of the Region. CBM has provided the Hostel and Vocational Training Centre and expanded the infrastructure to include a Vision Centre and Orthopaedic Workshop (with physiotherapy).
