for Blind / Visually Disabled
Children
Location: Paraguay, Asunción, Paraguay
Project Information: National outreach program in education and rehabilitation of blind children in the 14 provinces of Paraguay, carried out by public blind school Escuela Santa Lucia in Asunción. Programme focuses on early intervention, school integration and functional rehabilitation of multiple impaired children. The training of teachers in regular schools, where blind and visually impaired children are integrated, is an important aspect of the program. Partner Asociación Santa Lucia de Ayuda al Ciego is an autonomous institution which runs the school for the blind and a programme for transcription of books into Braille. The outreach work, which was originally planned for 7 provinces, was extended to the remaining 7 provinces of the country on behalf of the Ministry of Education after the Ministry confirmed committment and coverage of salary expenses for staff involved.

CBM President Professor Allen Foster met with World Health Organisation Director-General Dr Margaret Chan, for the WHO's global initiative to eliminate avoidable blindness "Vision 2020: The Right to Sight” on the eve of World Sight Day 2007 at the WHO's headquarters.
