Ancilla Catholic Hospital, which is owned by The Congregation of the Handmaids of the Holy Child Jesus, is situated in a densely populated suburban part of northern Lagos, the largest city in Nigeria with an estimated population of 15 million inhabitants. The small eye unit is presently housed in a rented building. It is managed by an energetic ophthalmic nurse. A piece of land has been acquired for construction of the general hospital and the eye hospital. The eye hospital is under construction. The medical director of ECWA Eye Hospital-Kano is performing mobile surgical outreach at the eye unit. There is very good potential for this eye hospital to develop into a high volume specialist eye centre due to the lack of affordable specialist services in Lagos. A medical doctor Sister, presently in her first year of DO training, is expected to return to the project in 2008. |
