Project Description: Eye Hospital
for Blind / Visually Disabled
Location: India North, Bulandshahr (Uttar Pradesh)
Project Information: Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, 80 kms south east of Delhi under the management of, P1692, Venu Charitable Society. A medical eye care satellite set up with CBM-LIONS-BMZ co-funded assistance in 2001. The project was earlier combined with the main tertiary centre for purposes of CBM budgets. It has now been bifurcated with effect from budget 2006 for better monitoring and evaluation. The catchment area covers the entire district of Bulandhsahr with a population of 3.6 million. Agriculture is the main occupation but migrant agricultural labour and farmers with marginal holdings constitute the urban and rural poor in need of services. The project provides comprehensive community eye care services and has reached a significant level of self-sufficiency.

CBM President Professor Allen Foster met with World Health Organisation Director-General Dr Margaret Chan, for the WHO's global initiative to eliminate avoidable blindness "Vision 2020: The Right to Sight” on the eve of World Sight Day 2007 at the WHO's headquarters.
