Project Description: Eye Department
for Blind / Visually Disabled
Location: India North, Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh)
Project Information: Gorakhpur-Basti in the Himalayan foothills of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, about 12 kms from the local airport on the much used route to Kathmandu, Nepal. A general hospital managed by the Purvanchal Gramin Seva Samiti (PGSS) a Social Work Department of the Catholic Diocese of Gorakhpur. Eye services have been introduced with the assistance of CBM. The catchment area is the entire district of Gorakhpur with a population of 3.7 million. Generally the literacy rate is low, land holdings are marginal or uneconomical, rate of growth of population is high and addiction to alcohol makes the locals economically backward poor. CBM support is for the eye department with the aim of training the ophthalmologist and paramedics, and to equip the project with essential instruments and equipment to provide comprehensive community eye care services in the area. This project, once well-established could be the much needed check to numerous Indian patients who presently have no other option but to go to Lahan, Nepal.
