The aim of CBM's work is to support as many persons with visual, hearing, physical, intellectual or psychosocial disabilities in low-income countries as possible through healthcare, education, rehabilitation, inclusion and livelihood generation activities. The focus is on the one hand on prevention and healthcare for diseases leading to disability as well as on the other community sensitisation through education, rehabilitation and empowerment activities, with the aim that persons with disabilities can enjoy their full human rights, be fully included as equals in their society and lead a largely independent life.

In realising this aim, CBM always works in partnership with national and local organisations. Today, CBM supports more than 1,000 projects in over 100 countries. These projects are conducted in a professional and efficient way to ensure a multiplying effect.

CBM is engaged in collaboration and networking with Governments, Civil Society and International Organisations to advocate for inclusive development practices and advise in the development of relevant policies, strategies and legislation as well as capacity building.

Some current fields of work are:
  • healthcare, surgical and rehabilitation services to prevent disabling conditions such as visual loss
  • education and rehabilitation for persons with blindness and low vision
  • healthcare, orthopaedic and physiotherapy services for persons with physical disabilities
  • education, rehabilitation and training for persons with deafness, hardness of hearing and deafblind people, and prevention of hearing impairment
  • support for persons with psychosocial disabilities or multiple disabilities
  • professional (healthcare, educational and rehabilitation) training of local co-workers
