The recent natural disasters in South and Southeast Asia reconfirmed CBM in its increasing commitment to mental health work. Many survivors are in need of neuro-psychiatric care, but the chances of gaining access to mental health services are very limited in the developing countries. CBM is therefore engaged in projects that extend help to people with neuro-psychiatric problems.

Goal: Reducing the Cases
Worldwide over 400 million people are impaired by mental disorders; a great many of these people can be helped. It is a medium-term goal of CBM to contain the prevailing neuro-psychiatric disorders which are:
  • psychosis
  • epilepsy
  • depression
  • post-traumatic stress disorder

Focus on Community-based Work
To achieve this goal, CBM promotes the inclusion of mental health work in community-based rehabilitation services; the work at a community level consists of a combination of the following:
  • education
  • medication
  • family support
  • practical advice
  • livelihood development

In Figures

In 2006,
  • 15,870 (2005: 10,000) people with mental health disorders were cared for
  • 14,233 (8,966) people, including 6,445 (3,082) children, took part in community-based rehabilitation programmes focussing on neuro-psychiatric impairments
